Operation Finale / Ralph Strasser
Mark and Gary Hillberg discuss the World War II sub-genre of films which dramatised Adolf Eichmann, the latest example of which is Operation Finale (Netflix), directed by Chris Weitz, starring Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley in the title role.
As a teenage schoolboy, Ralph was encouraged by a careers counsellor to enrol at three film schools. The one that accepted him was The Swinburne Film and TV School in Melbourne. His contemporaries there included Richard Lowenstein, Andre De Groot, Helen Gaynor and Geoffrey Wright. His 1980 graduation film Breakdown, was chosen to screen at Hoyts as the support to the Robert Redford baseball movie The Natural.
Next stop was Crawford Productions, where he worked as an editor on series like The Sullivans and Carson's Law. In 1984 he edited the feature Fortress starring Rachel Ward. Shortly after, he set out as a freelancer, working as an editor on two features directed by the Valhalla Cinema's Barry Peak, and beginning a long professional association with the late Esben Storm.
