Many of his films were financed by Hollywood, although he never actually made any films in Hollywood. The British film industry was in tatters when he began directing, but he made a considerable impact with Midnight Express (1979), which led to a diverse group including Birdy (1984), and Angel Heart (1987), the 5 musicals (Bugsy Malone, Fame, Pink Floyd The Wall, The Commitments, Evita), and the marital relationship drama Shoot The Moon (1982).

This has got nothing to do with television, get rid of it all'. (Skases' Quintex group had just purchased the 7 Network in 1987 and he was being shown over his new holdings).

As a kid Julian Ellingworth played with amplifiers and valves, built crystal sets and studied accountancy, but his true vocation was realised when he got a job lugging a sound recorder around the set of Michael Powell's They're A Weird Mob (1966). His name's not on the credits, but he was there and he has worked consistently from that day onwards. Artransa, Commonwealth Film Unit, Film Australia, Atlab,United Sound you name it - literally dozens of Australian feature film credits (and an AFI Award for Rebel), firstly as a sound recordist and then as a sound mixer.

Welcome to the world of frequency responses, guide tracks, noise reduction, post-sync dialogue and dynamic range. John's background, apart from his 2017 short film Mrs. McCutcheon, is in theatre and opera, but he's attached to three feature projects and his dance card is bursting at the seams. As a kid he recalls travelling by train into Melbourne from industrial Geelong to watch John Waters and Pedro Almodovar at the arthouses, and recalls a career highlight working with playwright Edward (Virginia Woolf, Zoo Story) Albee.

Next on the agenda was a short tribute to Australian producer Robert Bruning, and then the conversation ends with shared memories of Alan Ladd, an actor unfairly remembered in many circles for his physical stature rather than his acting talents. Ladd was emotionless in his best roles, perfectly cast in the downbeat film noirs at Paramount, (This Gun For Hire,The Glass Ket,The Blue Dahlia), which elevated him overnight from bit player to screen icon.

Episode 108 - End Of Year Round Up

20/12/2019

The final Film Buffs podcast for 2019 continues our tradition of taking a look back at the year that was and analysing industry trends. More movies numerically are being released than ever before, often day-and-date globally (presumably to reduce piracy).
* What exactly is 'alternate content‘?
* Is the primacy of the cinema release under threat from new players like Netflix et al?
* Does shrinking press coverage have a role to play in this?
* What about the 90 day theatrical window?
* Maybe audiences are NOT dictating that NOT everything is theatrical. Maybe that's forced upon them by business concerns.
Commentators Kristian Connelly, general manager Nova Cinemas, David Kilderry, manager-founder of Luna Drive-Ins, and Michael Smith, proprietor Sun Yarraville, take part in an extended roundtable discussion which goes some way to answering these and other questions.
